41 Years of MEDICA – a Success Story for Düsseldorf
Once upon a time in 1969 a medical congress with a small accompanying exhibition was held under the heading “Diagnostikwoche” (Diagnostic Week) in Karlsruhe. 135 exhibitors had reserved as few as 2,500 square metres of space. The key to “Diagnostikwoche’s” success, however, was most probably its fast move to Düsseldorf. Here the “2nd Diagnostic Week” in 1970 already registered 8,000 visitors, 140 exhibitors and 3,790 square metres of exhibition space.
After a brief “intermezzo” in Munich in 1971 the “Diagnostikwoche” moved to its final home in the beautiful city on the Rhine. This was definitely also helped by the fact that from 1972 the new exhibition centre complete with modern Congress Center was available here in the neighbourhood of Stockum. This busy flitting between venues, however, was not the reason why at best only older contemporaries remember the “Diagnostikwoche”. This is due to the name change taking place in 1974. Since 1974 this “Diagnostikwoche” has been called MEDICA and under this catchy, also internationally understood title MEDICA experienced rapid development. Today, it is the world’s largest medical trade fair and the accompanying MEDICA Congress is also Germany’s most important continuous medical education event. In cross-industry terms MEDICA is among the ten largest trade fairs. For the 42nd World Forum for Medicine held from 17 to 20 November more than 4,000 exhibitors from nearly 70 nations are expected once again.
